Explanation preview
This verse opens the genealogy of Judah, the tribe from which King David and, in Christian reading, the Messiah would come. The Chronicler, writing after the exile to reassure a small restored community of their place in God's plan, names Judah's three sons by Bath-shua, a Canaanite woman, and notes that Er, the firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight and was put to death.
