This verse opens the genealogy of Simeon, Jacob's second son, whose tribe was allotted land within Judah's territory rather than a separate region. The Chronicler lists Simeon's sons as Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah and Shaul, names that closely parallel the earlier census in Numbers 26, where Nemuel appears as the son of Simeon and Zerah is spelled Zerah.
