This verse comes from the Chronicler's genealogy of the tribes settled east of the Jordan. Having listed the Reubenites, he turns to the descendants of Gad, another son of Jacob, and notes that they lived beside the Reubenites in Bashan, a fertile region northeast of the Dead Sea, extending as far as Salecah on its eastern edge.
