1 Corinthians 9:18 meaning and explanation

What then is my reward? That in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not use up my rights in preaching it.

1 Corinthians 9:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul is defending his apostleship to the Corinthian church, which questioned whether he had the rights other apostles enjoyed, including support from the congregations he served. In verses 15 to 17 he insists he has refused that support, and here he names his reward: the satisfaction of preaching the gospel free of charge, without using up his right to be supported.
