1 John 4:11 meaning and explanation
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:11, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The elder John writes to a congregation troubled by teachers who have split from them, and he has just grounded love in the gospel: God loved us first and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins (verses 9 and 10). The Greek verb here, opheilomen, means we owe a debt; love between believers is not optional extra but the obligation that God's prior love lays on us.
