I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John, the elder writing to a congregation unsettled by false teachers, states his purpose plainly near the end of his letter. Throughout the letter he has argued that believing in Jesus as the Son of God is the dividing line, and here he tells his readers why he wrote: not to make them doubt, but so that those who already believe may know they have eternal life.
