1 Kings 12:19 meaning and explanation

So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.

1 Kings 12:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

This verse is the narrator's summary of the tragedy just described. Rehoboam, Solomon's son, answered the people's request for relief with threats, and the northern tribes rejected the Davidic dynasty with the old cry, "To your tents, O Israel." The rebellion was not a passing riot but a lasting rupture: the united kingdom of David and Solomon divided into north and south, and the writer, looking back from a later time, says the break still stood "to this day." The Hebrew word for rebellion can also carry the sense of a breach or defection.
