1 Kings 14:9 meaning and explanation

You have done more evil than all who came before you. You have proceeded to make for yourself other gods and molten images to provoke Me, and you have flung Me behind your back.

1 Kings 14:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from the prophet Ahijah to Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom, spoken through his disguised wife who has come to ask about their sick son. Jeroboam had received the kingdom as a gift from God, but he set up golden calves at Dan and Bethel and made priests and festivals to keep his people from returning to Jerusalem.
