When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned,

Solomon had allowed Shimei to live in Jerusalem on one condition: he must never leave the city, and he had sworn an oath to that effect (verses 36 to 38). Shimei broke that oath by going to Gath to recover two runaway slaves.
