1 Kings 20:42 meaning and explanation

And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”

1 Kings 20:42, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The prophet, one of the sons of the prophets, speaks to Ahab king of Israel after staging a parable with a wounded disguise. Ahab had just defeated Ben-hadad twice, yet instead of executing the enemy the LORD had devoted to destruction, he made a treaty and called Ben-hadad "my brother." The Hebrew word herem means something set apart for God, often for total destruction in holy war.
