Solomon is praying at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, standing before the altar with his hands spread toward heaven and the whole assembly watching. He has just praised God for keeping the promise made to David, and now he asks God to confirm that same promise, that David would never lack a descendant to sit on Israel's throne.
