1 Peter 2:24 meaning and explanation

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”

1 Peter 2:24, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Peter writes to believers facing suspicion and slander, and here he draws on Isaiah 53 to say what Christ did for them. The Greek word for “bore” (anēnenken) can mean carrying something up to an altar, and “tree” (xylon) is the word the Greek Old Testament uses for the wooden pole in Deuteronomy and for the cross.
