1 Peter 3:16 meaning and explanation

keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ.

1 Peter 3:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Peter writes to Christians scattered across Asia Minor who face suspicion and slander from their neighbors, and in verses 15 and 16 he tells them to be ready to explain their hope gently and respectfully. Here he adds the inward counterpart to that spoken defense: a clear conscience, the Greek syneidēsis, meaning the inner awareness of one's own conduct.
