Saul said to the troops who were with him, “Call the roll and see who has left us.” And when they had called the roll, they saw that Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.

Saul is camped with about six hundred men near Gibeah while his son Jonathan has slipped away without telling him to attack a Philistine outpost. In verse 16 the watchmen see the enemy camp dissolving into panic.
