1 Samuel 14:9 meaning and explanation

If they say, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stay where we are and will not go up to them.

1 Samuel 14:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jonathan, Saul's son, is secretly approaching a Philistine outpost with only his armor-bearer, having proposed that the LORD might act on Israel's behalf "whether by many or by few." In verse 9 he sets a test: the Philistines' words will reveal God's will. If the garrison says "Wait until we come to you," Jonathan and his companion will hold their ground; if they say "Come up," they will attack, taking that as the sign of deliverance.
