1 Samuel 15:11 meaning and explanation

“I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and cried out to the LORD all that night.

1 Samuel 15:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD speaks these words to Samuel the prophet after Saul has disobeyed the command to devote the Amalekites and their livestock to destruction, sparing King Agag and the best of the animals. The Hebrew word rendered "regret" (nacham) can mean to be grieved or to relent, and verse 29 later insists that God does not change His mind as a man does, so readers have long wrestled with how to hold these together.
