Michal, Saul's younger daughter, loved David after his victory over Goliath, and when Saul heard of it he was pleased. The narrator has just shown that Saul's pleasure is not fatherly joy: in the next verse he plans to use the marriage as a snare, hoping the Philistines will kill David.
