Abigail is the wife of Nabal, a wealthy but harsh man who has just insulted David's messengers and refused to repay David's protection of his shepherds. Without telling her husband, she loads provisions on donkeys and rides out to intercept David, who is marching with four hundred armed men, resolved to kill every male in Nabal's household by morning.
