1 Samuel 27:11 meaning and explanation

David did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘This is what David did.’” And this was David’s custom the whole time he lived in Philistine territory.

1 Samuel 27:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

David is hiding from Saul in Philistine territory, serving King Achish of Gath while raiding the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites. This verse explains his motive: he killed every person in the raided settlements so that no survivor could reach Gath and reveal that his attacks had not been against Israelite territory, as he claimed.
