The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
1 Samuel 4:11, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
This verse records the disaster that ended the battle: the Philistines captured the ark of the covenant, and Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of the priest Eli, were killed. Earlier in the chapter the elders of Israel had brought the ark from Shiloh as a kind of talisman, hoping it would guarantee victory, but God did not fight for a people who treated the ark as a charm.
