1 Samuel 4:9 meaning and explanation

Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”

1 Samuel 4:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The Philistines are speaking to one another in their camp, alarmed because the ark of the covenant has arrived in Israel's camp and they fear Israel's "gods." In verses 7 and 8 they recall the plagues on Egypt, and here their commanders rally the troops. Their fear is that defeat will mean slavery, that they will serve the Hebrews as the Hebrews once served them in Egypt.
