1 Timothy 3:1 meaning and explanation
This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
1 Timothy 3:1, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Paul writes to Timothy, his younger coworker left in charge of the church at Ephesus, and opens a section on church leadership with a familiar formula, “This is a trustworthy saying,” used elsewhere in the pastoral letters to flag a reliable statement. The “overseer” (Greek episkopos, meaning one who watches over) was a supervisory role in the congregation.
