Jehu had been anointed by the prophet Elisha's servant to wipe out the house of Ahab, and he was carrying out that commission when this verse takes place. Ahaziah, king of Judah, had tied himself to Ahab's family through his mother Athaliah and had gone to visit the wounded Joram at Jezreel.
