Athaliah, the queen mother, had seized the throne of Judah after her son Ahaziah died and had ruled for six years while the true heir, Joash, was hidden in the temple. The noise she hears is the celebration of the coup that Jehoiada the priest has just carried out, with the boy king crowned and anointed in the temple courts.
