King Hezekiah is speaking to the assembled priests and Levites in the first month of his reign, calling them to consecrate themselves and cleanse the temple his father Ahaz had defiled. Verse 9 gives the reason for the ruin they can see: the earlier generation's unfaithfulness to the LORD brought defeat in battle and the captivity of family members.
