2 Chronicles 33:1 meaning and explanation

Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years.

2 Chronicles 33:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

This opening verse introduces Manasseh, son of the reforming king Hezekiah, who took the throne at only twelve and held it for fifty-five years, the longest reign of any king of Judah. The Chronicler states the facts plainly before describing the evil that follows, and the length of the reign sets up a striking contrast: great longevity and great wickedness, followed by a genuine repentance later in the chapter.
