Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Jezebel of Israel and the mother of Ahaziah, king of Judah, who had just died from wounds suffered in battle. With her son gone, she moved to destroy every remaining heir of the Davidic line so that no rival could claim the throne, seizing power for herself.
