2 Kings 6:25 meaning and explanation

So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter cab of dove’s dung sold for five shekels of silver.

2 Kings 6:25, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Ben-hadad king of Aram has surrounded Samaria, and the siege drags on until food runs out. The narrator reports prices to show how desperate things became: a donkey's head, an unclean animal and a poor cut of meat, sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a small amount of dove's dung, perhaps a cheap seed or fuel, for five shekels.
