2 Samuel 1:21 meaning and explanation
O mountains of Gilboa, may you have no dew or rain, no fields yielding offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.
2 Samuel 1:21, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
David speaks this line in the lament he composes after Saul and Jonathan die on Mount Gilboa. In the ancient Near East, mountains could be addressed directly in poetry, and here David calls on Gilboa to bear the shame of the defeat: no dew, no rain, no grain offerings from its slopes.
