David is speaking to Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba's husband, whom he has recalled from the siege of Rabbah. David has already slept with Bathsheba and learned she is pregnant, and his first attempt to cover the sin failed because Uriah refused to go home to his wife while the ark and the army camped in the field.
