After Joab's staged appeal from the woman of Tekoa, David let Absalom return from Geshur, but only halfway: he came home to Jerusalem yet was barred from the king's presence. In that court culture, seeing the king's face meant acceptance and restored favor, so two years in the capital without access to his father was a public, daily humiliation.
