2 Samuel 16:20 meaning and explanation

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give me counsel. What should we do?”

2 Samuel 16:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Absalom has just entered Jerusalem and taken his father's palace, and he turns at once to Ahithophel, the counselor who has defected from David to him. His request for counsel comes at the moment of seizing power, and Ahithophel's answer in the next verse is to sleep with David's concubines on the roof, a public act that made reconciliation with his father impossible and signaled to Israel that Absalom now claimed the throne.
