2 Samuel 3:6 meaning and explanation

During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had continued to strengthen his position in the house of Saul.

2 Samuel 3:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Abner was Saul's cousin and the commander of his army, and after Saul's death he had made Saul's son Ish-bosheth king over the northern tribes while David reigned in Hebron. This verse describes a long civil war in which Abner, not the weak Ish-bosheth, held real power in Saul's house.
