Acts 16:13 meaning and explanation

On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river, where it was customary to find a place of prayer. After sitting down, we spoke to the women who had gathered there.

Acts 16:13, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The narrator, present in Philippi with Paul's team, describes their search for a place of prayer on the Sabbath. Philippi apparently had too few Jewish men to form a synagogue, so the group went outside the gate to a riverside spot where prayer was customary, likely for ritual washing as well.
