Acts 16:27 meaning and explanation

When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.

Acts 16:27, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The jailer at Philippi was responsible for his prisoners with his life. Roman law allowed a guard who let a prisoner escape to suffer the same penalty the prisoner would have faced, so when he woke to open doors and loose chains he assumed the worst and reached for his sword.
