Acts 21:1 meaning and explanation

After we had torn ourselves away from them, we sailed directly to Cos, and the next day on to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

Acts 21:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The "we" signals that the author, Luke, was traveling with Paul, and this verse begins the final leg of the journey to Jerusalem. The phrase "torn ourselves away" is vivid: the farewell at Miletus in the previous chapter was painful, and leaving the Ephesian elders cost something.
