As they were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?” “Do you speak Greek?” he replied.

Paul has been seized in the temple by a crowd who accused him of defiling the holy place, and the Roman commander rescued him from being beaten and had him bound and carried toward the barracks. On the steps Paul politely asks the tribune for permission to speak.
