Acts 28:2 meaning and explanation

The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They kindled a fire and welcomed all of us because it was raining and cold.

Acts 28:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The shipwrecked group, including Paul as a prisoner under guard, has just reached shore on Malta after the storm at sea described in the previous verses. Luke, the narrator, notes that the islanders, whom the text calls barbaroi, a Greek word meaning simply non-Greek speakers rather than savages, treated the survivors with unusual kindness.
