The temple officers go to the public jail expecting to find the apostles, but the cell is empty. This verse falls within a scene of growing official frustration: the high priest and the Sadducees had arrested the apostles out of jealousy, and during the night an angel had opened the doors and sent them back to the temple courts to teach.
