Amos 3:8 meaning and explanation

The lion has roared— who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who will not prophesy?

Amos 3:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Amos is the speaker, a shepherd from Tekoa called to prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel around the eighth century BC. In verses 3 to 8 he piles up everyday questions whose answer is obvious, building to a climax: a lion's roar spreads terror, and a prophet who has heard the Lord's word cannot keep silent.
