Amos 5:19 meaning and explanation
It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake.
Amos 5:19, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Amos is speaking to the prosperous house of Israel in the eighth century BC, and in verses 18 to 20 he answers those who long for the Day of the LORD as if it must mean their vindication. His image is a chain of escapes that each end worse: a man outruns a lion and meets a bear, reaches his house and leans on the wall, and a snake bites his hand.
