Amos 6:5 meaning and explanation

You improvise songs on the harp like David and invent your own musical instruments.

Amos 6:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Amos is speaking to the wealthy elite of Samaria and Zion, the northern and southern kingdoms alike, who live in luxury while ignoring the coming judgment. In verse 5 he mocks their leisure: they strum the harp and compose songs, comparing themselves to David, and they invent new instruments for their own amusement.
