Amos 8:6 meaning and explanation

Let us buy the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the chaff with the wheat!”

Amos 8:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Amos 8:6 continues the LORD's indictment of Israel's merchants, who cannot wait for the New Moon and Sabbath to end so they can resume selling. Their greed shows in three ways: they buy the poor with silver, treating needy people as cheap merchandise; they acquire the destitute for a pair of sandals, a trivial price; and they sell even the chaff with the wheat, passing off worthless refuse as grain.
