Amos 9:1 meaning and explanation
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds shake. Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
Amos 9:1, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Amos has a vision of the Lord standing beside the altar, most likely the altar at Bethel, one of the royal sanctuaries where Israel trusted its worship to keep it safe. The command to strike the pillar tops comes from the Lord himself, and the collapsing temple becomes the instrument of judgment on the people gathered there.
