Daniel 9:2 meaning and explanation
in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the sacred books, according to the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.
Daniel 9:2, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Daniel, an elderly exile in Babylon, has been reading the scrolls he counts as Scripture, and there he finds Jeremiah's letter promising that Jerusalem's desolation would last seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11 and 29:10). The date is the first year of Darius the Mede, so the promised time is nearly complete.
