Deuteronomy 1:15 meaning and explanation

So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes.

Deuteronomy 1:15, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, retelling how the nation was organized at Horeb. Because the people had grown as numerous as the stars, he could not judge every dispute alone, so he took the wise and respected men the people had chosen and set them over the people at every level, from thousands down to tens, with officers as well.
