Deuteronomy 24:16 meaning and explanation

Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.

Deuteronomy 24:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, setting out the laws that will govern life in the land. Here he limits blood guilt to the person who actually sinned: a court may not execute a father for his child's crime or a child for a parent's.
