Deuteronomy 24:18 meaning and explanation

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from that place. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.

Deuteronomy 24:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the land. Verse 18 grounds the commands around it, especially verses 17 and 19 to 21, in Israel's own story: they were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD redeemed them, the Hebrew gaal meaning to act as a kinsman-redeemer to buy back a relative.
