Deuteronomy 27:15 meaning and explanation

‘Cursed is the man who makes a carved idol or molten image—an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of a craftsman—and sets it up in secret.’ And let all the people say, ‘Amen!’

Deuteronomy 27:15, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses has arranged a covenant ceremony: six tribes stand on Mount Gerizim to bless, six on Mount Ebal to curse, and the Levites proclaim each curse aloud while all Israel answers. This first curse targets idolatry, whether a carved image or a molten one, shaped by a craftsman's hands yet called an abomination to the LORD.
