Deuteronomy 5:11 meaning and explanation

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.

Deuteronomy 5:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is addressing the gathered Israelites on the plains of Moab, retelling the covenant given at Horeb, and here he repeats the third commandment. The Hebrew word shav means emptiness, vanity or falsehood, so the command forbids using the LORD's name in a light, empty or deceitful way.
